'REAL ESCRIMADORES'

Dedicated to:

Tatay Domingo

Tatay Padilla

Tatay Gonzalo

When I met real life Guerilla's who employed Kali as their means to retaliate against the Japanese during WW2 in the Jungles of Samar, my appreciation for the FMA's was heightened.

I met 2 men who were real fighters and their stories......one of them was

 A Warrior I fondly called;

Tatay Domingo .

Tatay as I fondly called him lived in my grandfather's property in Cawa Maitum Saranggani Province in the Island of Mindanao , for so many years as I can remember - a stone throw away from my ancestral home in the said locality. He has seen me grow up and brag about my Karate - until that day when I showed off my

FMA ..skills and I saw Tatay Domingo Smiling and told me -

'Mao nang Tinuod nga Pangamut '

(that's what I call real hand to hand fighting)'

So I asked him if he knows Escrima and he just grabbed one of my sticks and showed me his 'Metodos' ,
then grabbed one of my daggers and showed me 'Espada y Daga Metodos' - to my amazement !!
I was almost in tears seeing the flawless movements and the intent in his eyes when he beat on that Mango tree at the back of our property.

Then he told me to wait for him since he will call one of his colleagues (another farmer)- i waited anxiously and herecomes another old man that we fondly called Tatay Padilla. When they arrived both of them took their shirts off brandishing their Latin Tattoos and told me:

'Ikaw lang gyud ang nakapagawas aning among tinago sa kadugay
nga panahon -hala obserbahi ni aron malingaw ka.
( Your the only person who made us expose our hidden skill, now observe so you will be happy )'

Then both men started with some drills- full power strikes- you would hear the cracking of the rattan (unlike the sinawalis) more of the BigayTama lines of LSAI-LESKAS. Then they took their bolos and did crazy carenzas , espada y daga Carenzas- all with power- not the WEAK dancing that we in the west are so accustomed to . Then Tatay Domingo asked me to attack him with the Machete that my Grandfather handed to me ( we were both watching these men), so i attacked him slowly- he said  'That's too slow-attack me like you mean it', so i did as he asked and so on the samples of these amazing gentlemen - Real Kalistas were displayed in front of me.

Then my Grandfather stood up and told me to attack him- I said, including you? They were all laughing.
Now Imagine yourself in my situation- how stupid i felt- showing my karate when my cousins were around- bringing the belts I got while these gentlemen were there not saying anything.  Finally I asked them. WHY? WHY now after all these years- and they all laughed and said 'You never asked", damn it I said to myself- they also told me that they found nobody worthy of the skills they have - so the stories about their skirmishes went on and on- you can see in their eyes like these skirmishes happened just yesterday- though it was 50 years ago ( these was in 1996).

Sadly all these men had gone to be with their Lord.
(They were all Christians- they were all active with our local church-
and they all professed their faith in The Lord Jesus Christ as do I)

But their stories were as real to me as to them. I have witnessed real guerilla fighters- who are not self proclaimed Grandmasters - real warriors - who used their skills and in real life against all odds.

I spent all the time I could get getting training from these men-until they could not teach  me anymore.

This to me is a ' LEGACY'  handed down to me by these great men - heroes to me  .

Not merely stories , but I witnessed their prowess  in spite of their old age - a testament that

REAL - again REAL Filipino Martial Arts

are for the regular citizens- these will be a lasting memory- even if no one remembers them I do and will always be thankful to these great warriors.

KALI !

What Others Say About 'K3'

From

Long Beach KOA Meetings and Seminars Report

Written by Roland Jenkins
Saturday, 15 August 20

The other stick presentation was provided by K3 Kali Kilat (lighting) led by Guro Leo Quilaton founder of (K3-LIGHTNING) (should be from Davao Philippines who studied Kali and Tang Soo Do) Daval Phillipines Kali Tung Su Do. He was assisted by Kalistas’ Robert Montifar, Jon Boncan and Dan Barretto (Now Former K3 Kalista-no longer affiliated with K3 as of the Time being).

Their philosophy (LSAI-LESKAS-MK)  is, “You strike us once we strike you 14 times.” The strikes are full and with intent and I must say I have never seen such force used in stick fighting before.

The demonstration covered the basic six strikes to the most sensitive areas of the body and the corresponding blocks. Foot work is crucial and solid balance maintained by never bringing the feet together, moving diagonal, yet always applying forward pressure. WHKD principles of constant forward pressure, broken rhythm and bridging the gap are incorporated.

What Others Say About Guro Leo

 First of all,

Thank you for the invitation! Leo C. Quilaton, and Grand Master Larry Ordonio.

It was a Great privilage and a wonderful experience to train in the ethics of Authentic Kali and Filipino Martial Arts  ,to have recived the hands on training , and I think It is a rariety In Houston to find Authentic Filipino Martial Arts .

This combat Art Has a lot to offer If people will open there minds and give it a fare chance ,rather than the conventional Karate or the fad or trend of MMA.

I would like to start with thanking GM Larry Ordonio at NCMA for hosting this event, of course I will thank Kali Instructor Leo Q. for sharing  his knowledge of this art!I went home a bit sore but still very energetic, I only wish we could have trained till late but I enjoy every minute of it.The instructions very very easy to follow, Instructor Leo was very good in his instructions and very hands on, Would definitely follow his K3 system and can't wait for the next seminar. I learned a lot of basics in the use of the stick & knife that I have not seen or heard before, I come from an Aikido & Judo background and only learned some Kali techinques but was lacking some basics and a foundation and K3 has what I was looking for. Again, thank you GM Larry , Instructor Leo and assistants, and all other members that participated and it made it a more interesting learning experience, can't wait to see the photos, thank you all.
